About Men
I stepped out into space. I was going 18,000 miles per hour. I was frozen with fear as I thought 'falling at 18,000 mph.' I have a place where I put fear, and I put it there, and did my five hours of work outside Space Station Mir.
- NPR Interview: Dr. Jerry Linenger, American astronaut, "Off the Planet."
Dr. Linenger is not the first or only man who has had to put his feelings in "a place" and go forward. But where is this "place?" Often it is in the body.
Of course women also "put" their emotions and stresses in their body, but it appears that for reasons of survival of the species, males are wired to make that shift very effectively from fear to going forward, as Jerry Linenger described. Often males get so good at making the shift quickly that they do it without being consciously aware of the emotion.
The disadvantage for men is that over time, these cumulative stresses, if "put" in the body, can undermine their health -- sometimes in major ways.
How do you eliminate these stresses from your body? This question has been of particular interest to me. Many of the modalities I've learned are dedicated to freeing the body from the effect of those past issues.
A favorite of many of my local male clients is the deep cross fiber massage described below, but sometimes gentle massage is helpful, for example when recovering from illness, flu, or surgery.
In addition to eliminating stress from muscles, I also know techniques, using acupressure meridians (NO needles) to target the body's vital organs and eliminate the current stress from those organs. I also use Qigong, the energy familiar in its martial arts form, to eliminate pain in the body.
